Cycling

The beautiful countryside of Durham and Northumberland has, understandably, become increasingly popular with cyclists. We have recently created a secure area in which you can lock up your bikes while you stay with us. Make us the base from which to explore the local area, or just stay for a night on your way through: either way we would love to see you.

We are also really fortunate to be across the road from the brilliant North Pennines Electric Bike Hire. Which is just a completely fun way to explore this beautiful area.

Walking/Hiking

This area of outstanding natural beauty is simply a wonderful place to walk and hike and is much less discovered than other areas of the country.

You can simply park your car or bike up for the weekend and set off from the Hostel on foot into the beautiful surrounding area, whether it be the tree lined roads of one side of the reservoir or the unspoilt climb to the top of the local fell; there is more than enough to get you off the beaten track locally before heading back to the hostel and a pint in the Baa.

We are also a great and affordable base to drive a little further afield and walk the coastal routes of Northumberland, the Roman Wall or to explore Kielder Revervoir.

Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club and Fishing

Lowhouse Haven is a very practical and accessible place to stay  to make the most of the fantastic facilities at Derwent Reservoir, which is practically at one end of  Edmondbyers Village.

The sailing club hosts numerous events, races, regattas and sailing courses throughout the year. If you are visiting to take part or spectate, we are happy to offer a discount to sailing club members.

The reservoir is also a great place for fishing; the reservoir provides opportunities for those who enjoy the social side of the sport or  prefer to sit peacefully in rural seclusion. For details of fishing permits and local rules, please use the link below:
